What is the difference between the Navy and and the Marines?

The Marines are like the Navy's "army." As others have said, virtually all Navy vessels have Marine detachments on board. Pick any aircraft carrier and I can virtually guarantee that at least one squadron in a Carrier Air Wing will have F/A-18's that say "MARINES" on them.
They learn naval terminology in Boot Camp; i.e., a "stairway" is a "ladder" and a "latrine" is "the head."
Much of their operational support comes from the Navy, like medical officers and Chaplains.
That said, they have more independence from the Navy than the British Royal Marines do from the Royal Navy.
