Vigrous reaction with release of hydrogen gas.
eg 2M + 2H2O ---->2MOH + H2 where M = alkali metal

It is unlikely that you would add francium (Fr) to water since there is so little of it in the Earth's crust (just a few hundred grams at any given time). Alkali metals (group 1) all react vigorously with water to make a basic solution (the metal hydroxide) and hydrogen gas (H2).
For example:
Na(s) + H2O(l) --> NaOH(aq) + H2(g)
