The following is a list of sites where you can learn Portuguese (European) for free:
http://www.travlang.com/languages/index.html
http://www.goethe-verlag.com/book2/index.htm
http://www.internetpolyglot.com/
http://www.loecsen.com/travel/0-en-67-2-16-free-le...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/portuguese/index.sh...
http://www.unilang.org/course.php?res=74#ci--l1
This one is to help you with verb conjugation: http://www.verbix.com/languages/portuguese.shtml
It's not recommendable to mix up European and Brazilian Portuguese, because you'll learn a mixture of both and then you'll not be speaking like a Portuguese, nor like a Brazilian, so it won't really make sense. In case you're interested in knowing the differences, you can read an answer of mine about that, here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgFip...
I hope this helps.

I really like The Azores. It is very picturesque and the dairy products are wonderfully tasty. There is probably too much creole in Cape Verdi.
The dialect might be a bit different from Lisbon, but it is closer than Brazilian.
If you want to stay in Iberia, I think I'd try to go to a small town on the coast. Lisbon is a big city and people are concerned with their daily tasks. Perhaps they are too busy for conversation with you.
I fly with the US Air Force and have visited Brazil, Lisbon and Lages in the Azores. My host in Lisbon took me to a wonderful restaurant on a cliff north of town overlooking the violent Atlantic surf.
Good luck.
