"Salon" is a word of French (and Italian) provenance that, in its original connotations, meant a large reception room. The "Salon de Paris," which began in 1667, was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. I would assume the painting was made for a Salon de Paris held in 1868.

If you look up Salon (Paris) on Wikipedia, all will become clear!
