I'm an ICU nurse. Unfortunately, Lamar Odom's story is nothing new to me.

Nobody really knows what's going on except his family and the medical team. News reports may or may not be accurate, and they're pretty sketchy on the details of what actually happened. (As they should be, because even famous patients are protected by patient privacy laws.)

Based only on what I'm reading, it sounds like he may or may not recover. If he does recover, he may have suffered brain injury due to lack of oxygen while he was unconscious. For him to recover completely and be 100% intact neurologically would probably take a miracle. (And miracles do happen!)

Again, it's absolutely impossible to predict what will happen to him, because I'm going off news reports, not a physical assessment, physician's notes, or firsthand conversations with his medical team. I'm just laying out the possibilities based on what I've seen with patients like Odom.

He'll probably live or be able to be kept alive. The bigger questions are regarding how he will be alive... With or without the need of artificial breathing, feeding, etc? and then what will his quality of life be like if he ever returns to a conscious state?

This will depend greatly on how much, if any, brain damage occurred due to the prolonged deprivation of oxygen. Unfortunately we the public know very few concrete details regarding the mentioned aspects of his case. As other users have pointed out, the only ones with the full and accurate details are the medical staff treating him and some of his immediate family.

Generally brain damage can start occurring after 4 minutes without oxygen. It should be strongly noted that the above stated is only a loose guideline and not a accurate scale for every person and case. Brain damage has been seen in cases with much fewer than 4 minutes of deprivation. Likewise in cases when deprivation has gone many minutes passed the 4 minute mark, patients have made full recoveries with no noticeable signs of or no noticeable effects of brain damage.

I'm sure he'll pull through. It's a sad situation with what he's dealing with. Sometimes people have to hit rock bottom but hopefully it will be a wake up call if he makes it through and recovers. I'm not sure all the drugs he's taken or how much but given that he's a former athlete that's possibly in somewhat good shape plus whatever money he has left to fund his rehab/recovery he's got a better shot than your average joe. I never really cared for Lamar and never saw him as someone to look up to based on his past but at the same time it's tragic to see someone that seems to have it all and has to fill a void by turning to drugs and sex and end up the way he is now.

It's sounds like he is in critical condition and things don't look good but there is always hope. He had 2 friends die this year a week apart. One for an overdose on heroine and then his best friend due to flesh eating disease from an needle that he used to inject himself with heroine. I have to say that when this occurred that I thought Lamar and wondered if he might be next. He has been through a lot in his life and I hope he pulls through but then if he does I hope he truly gets the help that he needs!

Lamar Odom is a strong person, theres always hope, he may live if everybody gives hope and there prayers. Hes only 35, it would be tragic if he was to die as of now.

Mr. Odom can dribble as is and needs no support for that.

Mr. Lamar Odom, as usual, answers to a higher authority.

Feel free to play the Devil's advocate (if you're another

fan of Mr. Odom's brothel and illicit drug choices).

Lamar Odom is having some major issues right now

I have gone through a similar situation as Lamar Odom is going through now (minus the drugs). I do believe that he can survive it. I was in a coma for three days and had an ischemic stroke. This is one of the scariest things to go through and I think if enough people think positively about it and hope he can survive this, he will. Let's just hope his body isn't going to reject the treatments the doctors give him.
