    ~~~ He figured out how to make a bunch of superstitious ignorant fools follow him, and give him money and power!
    The natives made him a god because he fooled them with his Bic lighter and quick tongue!
    You need to go to The Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith History and read it for yourself. However, to summarize, there was a "revival" spirit in the area where his family lived and each of the Protestant denomination were proselyting for new members. Half of his family leaned toward the Methodists and the other half leaned toward the Presbyterians. He did not know which to join and the ministers argued so much over the same passages such that he did not trust any of their explanations. He felt that he was too young to decide for himself and the elders couldn't agree on anything either. Then he read James 1:5 which said that if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not. That passage was his answer so he went into a local grove of trees and knelt down to pray vocally and ask which church he should join. His faith in the Bible passage was such that he truly expected to get an answer and what he got was far more than he expected for God and Christ came down together and told him that he should join none of them for they had all gone astray.
    The Protestant churches that he was around believed that all miracles had ceased until Christ returned and he wanted a church where miracles could happen. Actually the Catholic church and a couple of obscure sects still believed in miracles, but Joseph wasn't around them. I don't think he met any Catholics until the Nauvoo period.
    It was not faith but a motivation to con people. joe was a cronic liar. He was notorious for cheating people on his fool treasure hunts.
    Got to hand it to joe, He is by far the best con artist the 19th century has ever seen.
    The fact that he was a con-artist, who realized that religion was the ultimate confidence trick.
    He tried to justify that having many wifes was o.k. with his God.
    So! He started a new religion with his own recipe.
    He realized that if you package a rock and sell it as being cool that almost anyone will purchase one.
