In the USAR do you have to hold a CW3 position in order to get your CW3 promotion?

Update:

I have a friend who was selected to get her CW3 promotion this year but her RPAC is telling her she has to be in a VALID SLOT in order for her to get her CW3, TRUE NOT TRUE? I am reading in the promotion regulation does not need a Valid CW3 slot to get promoted.. Someone tell me the real truth and maybe how the unit needs to submit for this promotion..

Generally in the reserves, you have to hold a slot which has the higher grade authorized. If in the case of officers, the person is promoted to a grade which is higher than their slot authorizes, the person is "promoted out their slot" and has to find a position which authorizes their new grade or go to the IRR or retire. Or possibly stay in their slot for a limited period of time as "overgrade". It sounds like your friend is in a bad position.
