Can a bad ear infection (otitis media) cause constant vertigo and tinittus?

When I was around 10 years old (I'm 19 now) i had a really bad infection in my left ear and required 2 surgeries done on it over the course of 2 years for it to finally stop. But the damages it caused was life changing and permenant. Because the infection destroyed my middle ear bones i now have permenant hearing loss in that ear (left), I also have tinittus which i know is a result of that. What i wanna know is, is my constant vertigo also a result of that? Or is it because of other factors like underweight, unhealthy, diet, etc? Can it be from the antidepressant pill paxil that i took a few times 2 years ago? Can it be from the anesthesia that i was put under for the surgery? This vertigo is a feeling of being woozy, feeling like your fading out of the real world, feels like your in a dream, fills like your ears are filled with water, feels like you're disconnected with yourself, and worse of all, because i feel so dizzy all the time i also have constant mental fog which makes things a million times more miserable because now i cant enjoy smooth long conversations because my mind is constantly searching for things to say with no success, in other words im always stuttering or stopping mod sentence to look for my words or how to word my sentence. Someone help me.

    Hello,

    Thank you for the question.

I think your list of current symptoms, is longer and more complicated than just "vertigo." The whole thing sounds more like a "general brain-fog" to me. The dizziness is only one part of it all.

We know that the tinnitus followed closely after your major ear surgery, - but it sounds as if this general brain-fog and the dizziness are more recent? I think the point is well-made by 'Sydney,' that a connection would be more likely if your old ear infection was now flaring up in some way?

My guess is that you may be getting a flare-up of your depressive illness, for which you once tried Paxil (it does not sound to have been a great success). A depressive illness would better account for the general mental disconnection you seem to be describing.

In that case, a course of a better SSRI medication than Paxil would be more likely to help you. Your doctor could advise you.

By all means have your ears checked again, and have your blood-pressure, heart and arteries checked for other causes of dizziness at the same time.

Have rarities like an infective brain abscess ruled out. That would cause a big rise in your white blood-cell count.

But I don't think an ear problem alone, is enough to account for all this miserable mental fog you are describing. You suggest too, that you may be at risk of being underweight, unhealthy generally, and eating a poor diet?

I think your doctor will also need to consider, whether you have any "more-obvious" depressive symptoms, - like mood swings, very low mood, awakening from sleep or difficulty sleeping, self-neglect, low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts? - all that sort of thing.

Perhaps you can recall the mental symptoms which led to the diagnosis of a depressive illness before? - is there any similarity there, to your present symptoms?

I hope this is of some help.

    Best wishes,

    Belliger

If you haven't been having vertigo since the surgeries, then i would say that I dont think the two are related.

The best thing you can do is first go to the doctor, so he can see if you have an ear infection. IF you do not, go see an ENT. ( Ear nose and throat )

Another thing that can bring on Vertigo is Sinus infection. The Ear Nose and Throat can check for that too.

    Good luck!

Having suffered from vestibular migraine for years. I can really appreciate when someone understands a sufferer's frustration, worry and despair. The Ultimate Vertigo Protocol is like having a real human guide you to a vertigo free life. As soon as I started to apply the method, I have noticed improvements. Now, 7 days later, it feels like living a miracle. I would highly recommend this book to I anyone with vertigo & dizziness
