Vertigo in the dark?

For years I ve been sleeping with the light on because when I am in pitch black I get extreme vertigo. It s as if my body is being put through a dryer. It doesn t matter if I m sitting, standing or laying, anytime it s pitch black I lose all balance. I do just fine even if all I can see is shadows but when it s black or all I can see is dark I feel like my body is spinning out of control and I actually have to hold onto something to know that I m stationary. What is this?

You probably have something wrong with your balance centers. Your body relies on information from different sources to maintain balance. In different conditions you rely more heavily on different sources. In the dark you rely more on your balance centers, legs and feet. If you balance centers aren't working correctly you are more likely to either feel like you are vibrating or spinning when in the dark, where your more reliable sources of information, like vision, don't contribute.

When it's pitch black your body has a harder time trying to orient (position) itself. It happens to me all the time.
