Why is the media allowed to host the 2016 election debates?

I think that it may be a conflict of interest for media to host the debates. The runners may get a future look at the questions asked, may get more biased questions asked towards them, etc. They are suppose to be non-affiliated with the government entirely and yet they are the ones playing the biggest role in the elections. enlighten me as to why this is alright?

Update:

-There is a cable television "show" called c-span?????????? a duh. maybe they would be the reasonable candidate show to air it?

Nobody else is interested, Jesse. By hosting the debates and broadcasting them, they not only fill some of their space, they have things to rehash until the next debate. I doubt you will see McDonald's or the NFL sponsor one.
