Cheap Trick are the Grandfathers of modern Alternative, guitar driven Power Pop. Eventhough their best music was in the late 70's. Their 80's hit "She's Tight" is pretty good.
Cheap Trick and The Cars even played a double bill in 1978. I wish I had been there.

One of the most genuinely "New Wave" bands with great guitarwork was Tears For Fears (Sowing the Seeds of Love, Broken, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, etc.)
Cheap Trick had some great ones (Mighty wings, Danger Zone)
The Knack's "My Sharona" had a wicked solo.
