Tips for crochet with thick and fuzzy yarn?

I recently bought Lion Brand Homespun Thick & Quick yarn and wanted to do the pattern that was on the wrapper (???) and when I chain, I can't see anything. The yarn just blends into itself, and after just winging it, I couldn't see any of the single crochets or the loops you crochet into.

    Work in good light, and use a larger hook if you have to crochet more loosely.
