While I concur with the main point of your question, I disagree with its phrasing.

The killing happens not because of faith, but because of lack of faith. If they really believed God has power and knows best, these people would not think that they need to correct his work by killing a bunch of people he created. They believe in themselves, and they kill to keep God captive to their will.

I agree that's dumb. And it's dumb regardless of which specific religion they claim to follow. Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists have all done so, fairly recently.

I guess the notoriously murderous atheist regimes of 20th-century Communism at least had the excuse that they didn't claim to have any faith.
