Is my E:\ drive external? It is called new volume on my computer?

Yeah, don't judge my unbelievably terrible understanding of hardware, I know quite a bit about software though :)

Update 2:

When I go onto backup it says that the drive is on the same physical disk as my system drive,

    Sounds like it might be a second partition on your main drive. A drive letter refers to a volume and a drive can have multiple volumes. It is common for computers to have a separate volume on the same drive as C for backup and restore stuff, if you want to restore factory settings.

    It's impossible to know without looking at your computer. Do you have an external drive, USB stick or SD card?

    Maybe. Simply being assigned the letter E doesn't necessarily mean it's an external drive. It just means that the drive assigned E was added after the drive assigned D.
