can you stop a machinery fire by covering the top?
like if i put a piece of thick steel on the top. could that in anyways make it worse. I know your supposed to close the flue but would capping the top help it further or make the fire worse?
i meant chiminey fire btw

Depriving the fire of oxygen can't make it worse. That said blocking the chimney, either by closing the flue, or covering the top won't entirely cut of the oxygen. That is merely one PART of the job.
