original "fat" ps3 using component cable question?
Ok, I have a slim ps3 and its about on its last leg so to speack. Im gonna get a fat ps3 simply because there cheaper, but I have a question about using component cables. My slim only lets me play games and apps in all resolutions with component but dvd and blu-ray is limited to 480p. Ive been reading that "fat" ps3 models dont restrict resolution with dvd and blu-ray and that the restriction was a hardware change not firmware. Does anyone who has a "fat" ps3 inform me as weither this is true or not. ( and dont tell me the component cables wont do 1080p cause games that output 1080p and my older bluray player do it......i know my tv tells me what resolution the video everytime it changes)

I have the original fat PS3 with 4 usb ports on the front and PS2 backwards compatibility, so the very original one. When I first got it, I was using component cables, but I'm pretty sure the PS3 limits component output to 1080i. My Xbox360 would do 1080p over component, but I don't think my PS3 would. I could be wrong about that. You don't gain a ton of quality though as 1080p is pushing twice the data of 1080i over the same analog cables. Since they don't carry 1080p that well, some devices limit them to 1080i. In any case, at least the very first model will play them in 1080i. I can't speak for the later fat models with 2 usb ports and no PS2 support, or any of the later models.
It may also have to do with discs that have HDCP copy protection. Early blu-rays didn't use it because many TVs didn't support it, but I think movies that DO require HDCP (any from the past few years for the most part) will change it to 480p. I'm not sure about the hardware difference, but that was a thing with the HDCP spec, is that if it couldn't confirm that HDCP encryption was being used (Which can only be done over HDMI), it will limit to 480p. When I was using component cables, no movies required HDCP yet so I can't speak on that.

If you get a system with the 4USB ports, the launch model, it won't have the problem.
Somewhere in the life if the first model iteration (fat model with 2 USBs) they took out that functionality so you had to have HDMI to get 720p or higher output. I don't know if you can tell by looking which is which.

Incorrect. The blu-ray player in the PS3 (ALL PS3s) will only play upscale DVD movies to HD or play blu-ray movies in HD IF AND ONLY IF you are using a HDCP certified cable, which right now, is only available with HDMI.

Newer movies (both dvd and blu ray) are hdcp protected. If hdcp encryption is not detected, the movie will not play on hd. Currently, the only way to get hdcp (and hd movies) is with an hdcp certified hdmi cord. (Just about all hdmi cords these days are)
