Where is a good place to live in California?
I'm just daydreaming about moving out of Minnesota. L.A. is just too big for me, San Fran is too expensive. I was watching a movie that was set in Ventura.

As a general rule, you will find that things get cheaper as you move east from the coast, and as you move north from San Francisco. Ventura is rather expensive, like all areas adjacent to the ocean, and is almost a suburb of Los Angeles. As you would probably expect, for the most part the less expensive areas are also less attractive.
BTW, the idea that California is a "high tax" state is a myth. It is actually one of the lower tax states for the middle class (it does tend to soak the rich a bit more). The problem in California is not taxes, but the cost of housing.

The first thing you need to do is NOT believe the Hollywood Version of California. Extremely expensive everywhere (cheaper in the desert and farming areas, but not by too much) high taxes, ridiculous laws being enacted constantly that drive away business and cost taxpayers more money, big drought that is destroying many of the nicer areas away from the cities, crowded with heavy traffic EVERYWHERE in the state, property prices that are beyond stupid, violence and crime becoming worse each year and don't forget about earthquakes. (No really bad ones lately, but...)
I'd look more at the Atlantic coast in northern FL, SC and GA, or along the Gulf from TX to the FL Panhandle. Equally warm and a whole lot cheaper and friendlier.

California has high taxes, including State income tax. Nevada has no State income tax. The cost of housing, including purchase and rentals of homes, double wide motor homes, and manufactured homes in North Las Vegas, Nevada is low, with some of the rental spaces in mobile home parks is around $400.00 a month and the cost of some manufactured homes is less than $40,000.00 with some as low as $20,000.00. The cost of living is low in Las Vegas as long as one doesn't gamble as one will loose when gambling and the locals mostly never gamble.

You're looking for something that disappeared 40 years ago. There is no "cheap and safe" in SoCal. If you're tired of digging out of snow every winter, try NorCal, north of Sacramento. Like Chico.

sanfran cisco is the best bc it has more culture, its more white, and still has some old california families and institutions. The rest of california is lower class.
