I highly discourage you from updating to Windows 10 because of a multiple reasons. Primarily windows 10 is conducting a major project in data mining using servers known as "vortex" and telemetry (more ongoing, older). They are absorbing countless people's information into their own database – that is why it is free – (you are paying them through big brother surveillance). Software and hardware drivers are a hit and miss, sometimes hard to find and can be often incompatible with your system. If it ain't broke don't fix it. You will probably run into issues if you have been heavily relying on Windows 7. Particularly for me, windows 10 performance is at an all-time low in comparison to Windows 7. The boot speed is a plus, but definitely not worth it. WX is slower. Don't get it. Just perform a clean install of Windows 7 (backing up software and drivers and personal files) and speed will be restored. Windows 7 will be supported for security updates till 2020, so you will be fine.
Source(s): Experience. Cyber Security Professional. I reverted back from Windows 10. I would never go back to windows 10, especially with all the one drive features and whatnot that absorb my CPU power. Conjointly, you cannot disable windows defender which consumes MAJOR resources from scanning in background and update agent. - trurider tLv 65 years ago
I have Windows 10 and although it is a lot more sensible in many area's - I would say don't change until at least March/April time. Windows 10 still has issued MS haven't sorted. You could even say MS are using US to find the faults in it.
Most of what is written here is absolute BS. Windows XP is no longer supported so you will find that the driver's are no longer being updated and your system will run slower and slower. Windows 7 is still good but don't bother with 8 or 8.1.
Games for Windows 7 and Vista can be played on Windows 10 without issue.

This depends on many things. If you are a gamer and like to play older games (like Rome total war, max payne 1&2 etc) then you shouldn't upgrade. Older programs are no longer supported (I'd say maybe older than 2007 but i'm not absolutelly sure). But if you use it for movies, mail, music or new games, then i do recommend upgrading. Don't listen to all the people saying that it messed up their audio, mics and everything. Sometimes, when you don't have the latest drivers, windows 10 will not support thkse drivers that you have, so you simply have to go to the manufacturer's (of the sound card, microphone etc) site and get the latest drivers. There are plenty of tutorials for this if you are a pc noob :-D
Win10 is better for office stuff. The mail app is very nice. So in a nut shell, unless you want to use opd programs, you should upgrade.

I upgraded my 7 to a 10, because the 7 won't be receiving Microsoft support much longer. That could impact my security. After you update, you should install DriverUpdate. Otherwise, your Windows Defender won't work anymore. You should also remove and then reinstall Ccleaner. Other programs will do okay if you go to their Properties security section to resolve compatibility problems. However, the upside is that your files will remain intact after the upgrade...unless you're using a system older than a 7. I'm also happy that I won't have to shell out lots of cash for a whole new computer.

windows 8 is an embarrassment to Microsoft that is why they brought out 8.1 and left out 9 to draw a line in the sand so-to-speak. Window Vista is all singing and dancing, Windows 7 is a reasonable solid foundation. Note: With each development Microsoft tries to cut out the Tech within the user experience as most people are not Tech. Windows 10 is the next generation of streamlining with a few more gimmicks and directed marketing. With new developments, each version does have speed improvements, however some designing is much to be desired (not to everyone s taste - one pace forward two back) e.g. Explorer is not brilliant, however personally is better to look at than the new Edge in Windows 10. Unfortunately, In late 2015 one is lucky to load the front page of Explorer. Google Chrome would be ok if one is not booby-trapped with hidden marketing and viruses bleeding into the system, leaving Firefox or Nightly the Beta version, to which I find the most satisfying or better described as getting me to my destination. I digress....Windows 10 is ok once you get use to it like all copies of windows from 3.1.
One just needs to remember they are not going to be all good, as no one will move on to the next version, as the company will go bankrupt...

DON'T DO IT!! Upgrading to Win10 was the worst decision in my life (overexaggerating of course, but at least when it comes to computering). I was one of the first ones to upgrade, and it instantly caused problems with my audio, skype, chrome, microphone, spotify and pretty much every other programs I had. It got to the extent where I had to run a complete system restore to actually get rid of some of the problems. I'm still having problems with Win10 though - for example, theres a constant buzzing sound in every microphone (i've tried with 4 different ones, all buzz the same. My computer fan is not responsible for this since I have one of the most quiet computers on the market). Furthermore the general system of windows 10 isn't responding for me - right now I cant change the volume, screen brightness or anything else because my system decided not to respond. This will probably last for about 3 hours or so, I'm used to it now.
Moral of the story - Don't upgrade. It's free for a reason, it's complete ******* ****.
Win7 was the best, Win8 was decent, Win10 is ****.

you need to make sure your computer is compatible before you take the leap. Audio cards, video cards, wireless mouse, wireless keyboards, printers, and scanners are the common hardware issues. As each applies to you, go to the manufacturer website and look for your model and see if it's Win 10 compatible and if not if there is a driver update for you.
You need to do the same for your software programs - go to manufacturer website and check compatibility and if there's a software patch to install. This is even more important if you play games because Win 10 comes with Directx v12 and most games won't run on it.

It has some vast improvements over Windows 7 and 8. It takes a bit of time to get used to it, but I wouldn't go back to Windows 8.1 now.

DO NOT UPDATE !!! Depending on your PC the update could literally fry it. Ive seen it happen and its not fun. Apart from that, if you do decide to update and and it magically does not fry your computer then it will just be monitored more closely for the rest of your life. Thats all these internet and software updates are. While we are thinking, "Oh my this works faster" they are going "Ohkay now so tell me something you wont actually tell the detectives" or "I'm going to listen in and see everything you say and do because im categorizing you all for the new age and you can't see or tell whether im hacking you or not" *smile*
