How important is the rubber boot for the headlight?

I changed the headlight on my 2001 Honda Civic EX Coupe and I forgot to put the boot back in; what role does the boot play exactly and how important is it? I'm in the process of looking for it, and ordering a new one failing that (less than $5), but I would like to know if I should make that a priority.

It seals the assembly, keeping dirt, and more importantly water, out of the housing

The boot keeps debris and the random splash of water out of the headlight housing. It will look and be dirtier inside faster without the rubber boot.

It keeps the head headlights safe and it is also water proof. You can use LED lights for your car head light, now many people use LED lights for their cars. Using LED interior lights in cars is the rage now despite the fact that they are pricier than other car lights like halogen. I used LED lights for my car also. I bought it from JDMastar, which is a LED company in USA. These lights are so attractive.

At high speed in heavy rain it will keep water out of electrical connections.

Make it a priority. Or, water will get in and short-circuit the power assembly.
