Did you ever take the midnight train to anywhere ?

    yep

    got a late night train from Geneva to Vienna about 20 yrs ago

    was woken up in the wee hours of the morning by Austrian border guards with machine guns and dogs asking for my passport

    most disorientating

    Yes. The midnight express. It took me to a horrid hangover the next morning
