Obviously this question has already been answered, but I thought I might add my opinion as a Midwesterner. I'm from Indiana, and have visited Chicago quite often. I have visited during both the winter and summer and I felt quite safe as a woman, although people aren't what you might call pleasant, they aren't rude. Ive never been shunned based on my color, white, and I've never witnessed a violent riot. It's actually not a horrible city, I'm not saying its a city of Angels, but I feel perfectly fine to visit alone. Now Gary Indiana is a whole other story, violent riots, poverty, crime, it's really quite scary.

You've generalized from 3 cities. There are many cities in the US. and most have Democrat mayors (although our mayor is non-partison- people don't run as members of a party). And many of those cities haven't had riots.
As for poverty, there is a natural tendency for people who make good salaries to want a large house with a yard, and so they move out of the city. That's true for both white people, black people, etc. That does leave much of the housing inside the city for poorer people, although in recent years there's been a trend the other way. Certainly the people who live in Manhattan are not poor- the cost of housing there is astronomical.

I live in Miami. Don't encounter much rioting, poverty, or unemployment around here. If my city is the worst America has to offer, then America must be doing pretty fine.
