Why am I so unaffected by watching human atrocities on the news?

For example I am seeing every day that Islamic lunatics are butchering people and I am unaffected and desensitized. However when I saw the news report of them destroy archaeological sites, ancient cities, and artifacts, I was furious and outraged. I know that people will die and repopulate, but remnants of past civilizations are priceless. Have I lost my humanity?

Update:

I remember these events of atrocities would affect me profoundly when I was younger. Now that I have seen so much brutality, I am essentially numb to it. However, seeing priceless artifacts destroyed angers me.

One of the worst things I heard about terrorists doing was destroying a thirty foot statue of the Buddha. Of course they are doing much worse things, it's just the nature of the religion becomes clear by them doing something like that. It's a horrible aspect of humanity which must be destroyed, or changed in some way, before too long, as globalization means that such things cannot just be ignored anymore.

Nah. Humans evolved in small groups, so it is both common and normal to restrict concern to your in-group -- your personal friends and family and to a lesser extent, peers and people with similar experiences. I don't want to exactly call it fake outrage, but the vast majority of people aren't affected in any way by these events, so it is difficult to understand why they would feel outraged by some murders half a world away and not care about the children going hungry in their own community. I suspect that it is a result of social pressure more than genuine concern.

Many in this world have become desensitized that's why all of us should focus more on human life that artifacts. God's given us life not to take life away but to preserve life. Satan on the other hand, who is the present ruler of this world, is using his power to influence man to show disrespect to human lives.

The Bible clearly states: “The whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.” (1 John 5:19) When you think about it, does that not make sense? This world reflects the personality of the invisible spirit creature who is “misleading the entire inhabited earth.” (Revelation 12:9) Satan is hateful, deceptive, and cruel. So the world, under his influence, is full of hatred, deceit, and cruelty. That is one reason why there is so much suffering.

(1 John 5:19) We know that we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.

(Revelation 12:9) So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him.

When bad happens in person you'll feel differently. That's human nature. It's not a good thing but it's also not a bad thing.

So what would you call it when whites slaughtered 100 million natives to build this evil country? How about whites going into the Middle East and bombing it? Vietnam same thing? How about robbing Africa of its resources? How about destroying nature by building cars, buildings, roads, etc. (industrial revolution)? How about shooting the nose off the Sphinx/ whitewashing history? We could on all day with the crimes whites have committed on this planet.

This old atheist shares your take on the wanton destruction of archaeological sites.

But the cold blooded murder of innocent Humans is a horror.

    Religion poisons...

No I feel the same way. It's disgusting to watch these animals destroy history. If you want to see the great Buddhas carved into the mountain side in Afghanistan you'll have to go find pictures, because radical Muslims destroyed them.

Archaeological sites won't last forever, either, even if no one intentionally destroys them. If they have any value, it's based on the fact that people can look at them and learn from them--so you must care about people.

I think it is called " compassion exhaustion." You can only care for so many, so much, for so long, before man's savagery towards his fellow man just leaves you feeling numb to human suffering.
