Steven, thanks for being the voice of reason. Your answer hit several points right on the bullseye.

People that want to carry a firearm should be allowed to do so, but they must also demonstrate that they fully know their rights, responsibilities and liabilities. More training (including possibly a "recertification course" every 5 years or so) would really be good start.

As for this shooter, only 18 months probation for shooting when there was no imminent threat? Way too light on the sentence.

@James-- She did nothing wrong? While she could legally carry a pistol she is only allowed to use said pistol if life or liberty was in danger. This is why our country needs to address these permits. There are to many ppl with permits who have no real knowledge of when they can legally draw and use the weapon. Requiring more detailed training in both law and use and maintenance would help much. We also need to figure out how to separate the ppl who want to carry to protect themselves and family from those who love the idea of bullying with the gun or just want to be a hero no matter how many ppl they endanger.

By the way I own many guns and had a permit to carry for years until health problems made me question if I was more of a danger to the public. How many of these gun nuts would make this decision?

Yeah that's about what you get in a DWI that actually KILLS someone the only difference is this guy won't be barred from buying alcohol or owning a car after his probation is up.

NOPE in the US a convicted drunk can REPEATEDLY drink and drive until they KILL someone then get 18 months probation AND DO IT AGAIN.

That is why alcohol kills 88,000 people a year compared to the 30,000 killed by guns and PEOPLE LIKE YOU ALLOW IT! Why no national background check to buy a car or alcohol?

I'll do you one better. This guy in arizona was not charged with any crime at all and was called a hero. Almost killed an innocent bystander and the person he shot at turned out to have had only a toy gun and never pointed it at anyone.

Also no charges were filed: http://www.cbs5az.com/story/24400692/pd-man-who-fi...
