Can someone help me out with energy levels?

So ive been told the energy levels are

2)8)8)8)...

But now im getting told that they are

2)8)18)32) which is confusing...

Also if they were 2)8)18)32

Why does calcium not follow that rule?

Energy levels are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, etc. These are the principle quantum numbers. If you are asking about electrons in each energy level, then it is 2n^2. So, for the first energy level (n=1) there are 2 electrons. For second energy level (n=2) there are 8 electrons. Third energy level (n=3) there are 18 electrons, and so on. The electron configuration for calcium (at.no. 20) is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2. The reason it doesn't "follow the rule" is because the 4s subshell fills before the 3d, so the 3rd energy level doesn't get its full compliment of electrons until zinc, which does have 18 electrons in the 3rd energy level.
