I want to gift a picture to my grandmother...?
So my dad thinks that i should give my grandmother a picture that I've taken for Christmas, and I actually like that idea since we haven't really seen one another in awhile, but there's a catch: I don't know what to take a picture of. A part of me wants to take some sort of family picture, but my parents are divorced and I don't see my dad till Christmas, therefore I'm left with taking a picture that any photographer would take on a day-to-day basis (also that just sounds corny). So what should i take a picture of? A Christmas tree? A candle? The sky? Or just anything that my eye is drawn to?
(And no, I'm not some 12 year old that thinks he's the equivalent to a pro-tag, I'm a 16 year old thats taking a photography class that uses a d5200)...

"I'm left with taking a picture that any photographer would take on a day-to-day basis (also that just sounds corny)" - Curious what you mean here. Use what you have learned so far, find a beautiful spot and wait for the right weather/lighting conditions and you may create a beautiful landscape photograph. Is there a certain place she likes (mountains, farm fields, forest, old buildings, etc.)? If you apply your skills and wait for the right moment, it will be better than a snapshot that someone else with less experience/patience would create.

I think your grandmother would much rather have a meaningful photo of you instead of generic photo of a Christmas tree, a candle or the sky.
Do you have a large photo of your grandmother now? If so, having your sit with the photo of your grandmother in your lap makes for a good pose and photo.

Take a picture of your grandmother, have it printed on silk photo paper then buy a nice frame for it.
If you can't take a picture of your grandma, take a picture of your whole family (including yourself) instead.

Well, here's a thought... set your camera on a tripod, set it on timer after focusing and setting the exposure and aperture and take a photo of your parents, siblings and yourself beside your Christmas tree and then take one of yourself. Frame both photos (you can buy 8"x10" frames at a 99¢ shop or a thrift shop) and send BOTH framed photos to your grandmom. I'm certain your grandmom will appreciate that. It's neither corny or silly... it fits in with the occasion and serves to let your loving grandmom see you and the entire family (include your pet/pets). Believe me, she will REALLY appreciate it and you'll bring a smile to her. I wish I could do that but my grandmom died decades ago.

How about a picture of you and any siblings next to a tree or having fun outside, snow if you have it.
In other words family with something seasonal.
