    That is one of the issues with insurance. The required limits of coverage were written when medical and property damage was much lower cost. Once you reach the max limits of the other person's coverage, you have to personally seek payment from that person (not their insurance). If that person doesn't have many resources, you either have to use your own insurance collision, and medical coverage, or you have to use your own health insurance.

    Usually your health insurance will not get involved if it was the result of an accident. Even if you get a lawyer and win a big settlement, you will have fun getting access to the funds, when the lawyer gets paid first, and other party doesn't have much - so they seek bankruptcy after you're done, and the money all goes away, but the bills remain, so you end up filing bankruptcy to erase the debts.

    Need more info.

    Was your wife at fault for the accident? Did you have full coverage or only liability insurance? From what you have said, the other driver didn't have enough insurance to cover your wife's medical bills.

    Check with your own insurance company. Most state require some sort of coverage if you have an accident with an uninsured mortorist and also what your health insurance will pay

    I'd advise you to live in a country like UK, where quality health care is a right, not a privilege only granted to the very rich.

    In the UK not only do we have excellent health care for a third of what you pay in the US we have much higher insurance limits. About $7,500,000.

    State funded health care has its upside.

    get nuther lawyer; hospital is fishing for someone to pay their max amt;

    prob can be negotiated to $10k, maybe 0.

    now add coverage for Uninsured drivers and Underinsured drivers to your policy.

    You state you have hired legal counsel. Any and all questions you might have with regard to this situation should be directed to them.
