Florida Toll Booths?

Update:

I'm traveling to Florida this coming February. We will be renting a car and we've heard that some roads/highways have toll booths, I was wondering what the average costs per booth is and what I should keep in the car for money, change, bills etc. We are from Canada so this is something I've never used before and I just want to be prepared. Thank you in advance!

Most care rental places will explain this to you. There is a transponder in each vehicle that keeps track of your tolls. We go to Florida each year and like you, were concerned the first time (We live in NY state and use EZ-Pass.) This last time, they just billed our credit card for the tolls. I will have my husband look up what happened when we were there in November. Easier now that years ago.

Added - DH just looked. No Sunpass record of this on our credit card - just EZ-Pass reloads (and that is for our OWN cars only). Must be it was somehow included. Call and ask. But no worries about throwing quarters!

Keep dollar bills and quarters in your car. Tolls are based on what rode you are driving on and how many axles your vehicle has. Most rental car places will offer you a vehicle with sunpass on them, meaning you don't have to stop at every toll to pay, you just drive through and it records your tolls on a box. Then the rental car place will charge you for the tolls you accumulated. I believe the rental car places charges extra for this service, which might be more convenient to you since you're not really familiar with our toll system. Having an epass also speeds up your drive time because some of the tolls are ridiculously long. If you have the epass there's a lane just for people with epass and you drive right though. Otherwise you need to stop at every window and pay the cashier.

Well, you could look at a map of Florida, notice where the toll roads are, and use other ones instead.

I'm also in Canada and I've been down to Florida many times (Too many for my liking, but that's another story), and I've almost never needed to use one of the toll roads.

Orlando has a bunch of them, but if you're flying in, there are good local roads one can use to avoid the tolls.

Pre planning your road use is a good thing.

I went to Orlando last month and the only two toll plazas we went through were between Orlando International Airport and International Drive. One cost $1.25 and the other $1.

We paid at the booth, with a $5 bill and got change. No problems.

There are many - Some can get quite expensive. The 417 which circles half the main area costs over $7.00 if you go all the way. The rental people will fully explain everything
