Unauthorized check written 2-3 weeks ago, what now?
My friend's father took $3,000 from her to buy a puppy about 3 weeks ago. She didn't know that he had done it until 2 days ago when she looked at her bank statement. He won't get the puppy for a few months until the puppy's immune system is strong enough to leave his mother. Do you think there is any chance of her getting the money back? He didn't ask her permission to take the money. Here's what we are unsure of:
We don't know if there was any kind of contract involved
We don't know who the person is, we just have the name of the person who the check was written to per the bank statement.
What can I do to help her? She was planning on going to school with that money and now she has nothing. She serves in the Air Force and she has a bank account with them which is where this money was taken from.
Please let me know what we can do if anything, thanks.
Also just letting everyone know, my friend is 23 years of age.

If the bank account showed dad as a joint account holder or as custodian, he had every legal right to take the money. This is the downside of such accounts.
If your friend is of age, she needs to open a new account as sole owner and transfer all remaining money to it.
As for finding the breeder and demanding the money back, that may not be possible.
Edit, according to you, the account is in her name only, he stole a check and forged her name. I'd check for any other missing checks, call the bank and the police. But this begs the question, if someone forged her name, how does she know it's dad?

there is nothing you can do
now she needs to sue her father for the unauthorized use of her money but tha is going to depend on the agreement they had between them about the account, and if he had any part in contributing to that account
as ex military she has sthe education benefits she built up while in the service she is not prevented from going to school
this is her affair and none of your business unless she is indigent and unable to maintain her own finances

She could sue her father or file criminal charges against him. What kind of father takes $3,000 from his daughter without permission? She should definitely tell the bank that her father is not authorized to write checks on her account, or move the money she has left to another bank.

You will need to file a police report on Theft of Check against her father. If that is not done nobody will do anything.

When someone steals $3000 from your bank account, the normal response is to call the police.

If the Father is on the joint account, he has a legal right to make withdrawals. All you girlfriend can do is "ask" her father to reimburse her, she has no other legal remedies.
