why is it every time I try to download a file I get "internet explorer has stopped working"?

    It's because IE is a terrible program. They don't call it "internet exploder" for nothing.

    Download a copy of Firefox. It runs much better.

    Have you tried using other browser like chrome or firefox. If not, try it.
