Why are Germany and Austria separate countries, when they are populated by ethnic Germans who speak German?

    Nations are not based on ethnicity. Furthermore, Germany wasn't a nation until 20th century. Before this it was many city-states.

    Same way Canada and USA are different countries and many others. Austria and Germany are very different as are the people very different from each other.........

    Same reason why Canada and the US are separate - we want nothing to do with each other.
