mercury and alluminium physics question?

A cube of aluminium with sides of 5.00 cm is placed into a large container of mercury as shown in the figure.

To what depth will the base of the cube sink?

Density of mercury = 13.5 g cm–3. Density of aluminium = 2.70 g cm–3.

    Mass of the cube = 5^3 * 2.70 = 337.5 g

    Mass of mercury displaced = 337.5 g according to that nice man Archimedes.

    So the depth the cube will sink into the mercury is given by

    5^2 * d * 13.5 = 337.5

    d = 337.5 / (5^2 * 13.5) = 1 cm.

    And all done without the aid of the figure you forgot to put in your question.
