Is Candide a strong Character?
I personally felt that every time candide was in a dire situation a character would be introduced to help him. In Chapter 2, when Candide was being flogged and he was begging to be shot “[a]t that very instant the King of the Bulgars, happening to pass by, made a stop (Voltaire p.16).” This man happened to save Candide. In Chapter 3, James the Anabaptist helps him after he goes through the misfortune of having a chamber pot dump on his head. In chapter 6, after the being severely flogged as an act of faith to prevent earthquakes and old lady helps him. This pattern of Candide being in trouble and someone helping him continues through the entire book. Even in the end of the book when Candide is miserable the Turk in a way saves him, by giving him the idea to start his own garden. Although Voltaire did a good job showing his change as a character. However Candide is a weak character and I would not subject anyone to that.

'Candide' is a satire. The incidents are grotesque and the main character's repeated escapes are meant to be funny.
