I can t potty train my dog?

My dog just turned one years old today. And he just pooped on the floor. I take him out on a strict schedule just like I have been ever since he was cleared to go outside at 4 months. Yet he still pees and poops on the floor. I always tell him no when he goes in the house, and I praise him like crazy when he goes outside. EVERY TIME. Yet he never warns me when he has to go, and if I catch him circling I ll take him outside immediately. I take him out after naps and in the morning when he wakes up, in the afternoon, and at night before bed. I have no idea why he still goes in the house. If I didn t take him outside, he would willingly go inside. My mom is going to sell him if he keeps doing this and I really don t want to sell him but I literally cannot do this anymore. Everyone in my family has a dog and it took them about 4-6 months to fully potty train them, two of which have the same dog breed as me. A Maltese yorkie mix. I cannot do this I just can t.

Something just is not working right.

When does the dog potty in the house? Does it happen at night or when he is unsupervised?

Quick answer to that is to make most rooms in the home off limits for the dog. Put up gates. And if he is pottying at night I would advise crate training. Look it up. I adore my dog and when I am home and awake she would never potty in the house, but if the humans are asleep or not home, well, she cannot be trusted. So she is crated at night, and crated when no one is home. I'd love to leave her out, but after trying many times (taking her for a long walk during which she poos and pees, than I leave her alone in the house for 2 hours...she has potttied somewhere) So if I cannot be actively watching her, in the crate she goes.

Also is he on a strict food/water schedule? If he is fed at the same time every day (most typical is for a 2 times a day feeding) ??? And don't feel bad about taking away water after a certain time of night. Say doggie eats at 5pm. Take away any extra food and water at 7pm. Take doggie out for potty at 9pm. Stay out there until both pee and poo are done. Than take doggie inside and before you go to bed crate. Wake up early in the am and let doggie go outside to potty, have a few sips of water, and back in crate until you are ready to wake up for the day. Or whatever sched works for you.

I'm sure many people will think I'm mean or whatever. But this is what has worked for me and my dog.

Also ------ dogs sense of smell may be telling him that it is ok to potty inside as he is smelling his poo from yesterday. Purchase some enzyme cleaners and really scrub those areas in whch the dog potties. Also, DO NOT LET THE DOG OUT OF YOUR SIGHT. He starts wandering out of the room, call him back and tell him to lay down. Generally a dog is not going to potty in front of you.

Hope I gave some helpful hints!

    Best of luck!

Dogs, like all animals, learn from other animals. My cat didn't know how to cover her waste until I surrounded her by other cats. Do doggy play dates, and take her to the dog park, and she'll learn from seeing. This will take time. If that doesn't work, just make sure you discipline them when they poop inside by just straight up telling them no. When they do go outside, reward them.

Not his job to "warn" you. Your job to provide sufficient elimination times, exercise and training.

Have you taken it to a vet to rule out anything medical?

Cant do it? Then re-home it with someone that will and Really Cares.
