It is done any many cultures because marriage is important to more than the couple who marry. Marriage joins families and has political and social benefits. Also young people might not choose based on values like religion or social class so arranged marriages are more a good fit.

I worked with an Arab who was from Israel and his dad said if he didn't choose by 25 they would choose for him. They took him to Israel and introduced him to his future bride. He family and his family had much in common so they brought her to America to stay with family in another state to prepare for marriage a year later. This young lady was probably more suited than anyone he would meet in America but not sure how it turned out. He was very judgmental about American woman saying things like a grandmother shouldn't date after being widowed, his bride has a chance of thinking like him. Indian people have a long culture too and they have classes so a high class couple wouldn't want their child to marry a lower class person.
