That's the camera I use, it is old, I love it, the outside is worn & rusty, but it just keeps going.

Like Frank says however, it's not good for high iso work, I don't go above 800.

NO! Based on your limted projected use, i would recommend a quality "bridge" camera. A bridge camera has a permanently attached zoom lens which enables you to shoot eveything from wide angle to telephoto shots, plus marco shots (close-ups of flowers, etc.) Yes brdige cameras are talked down on this web site and DSLR's are promoted more. But the fact remains that with a Canon or Pentax bridge type camera you can ( & I do) make sharp as a tack 16x20 elargements. Bridge cameras start at about $400.00 for the top quality ones. DSLR's cost much more then you must factor the costs of the extra lenses you find you "need".

In world of digital cameras, it's a very old and outdated camera that was introduced in 2009. There's no reason why you couldn't still make great images with it. And there's certainly no reason why you could use it to learn the fundamentals of photography. Where it lacks is in its high-ISO performance and processing speed.

Are you getting this as a gift or used from a known reliable source. Unused or refurbished samples of long-discontinued models are often sucker-priced. I have seen unused samples of T1i selling for over $800. Worth $800? Not at all.

Just like any dSLR, it's great but bear in mind that the quality of pictures you get will depend on your skill as a photographer.
