What is making my kitchen sponge decay so fast?

Every now & then I seem to get a kitchen sponge that falls apart too easy. I use a little bleach to clean the sink basin out.

It's the bleach. I bleached a kitchen sponge once and left it in the bleach solution a little too long, probably 15 minutes. It disintegrated. Bleach rots fabric.

Bleach will attack the plastics that sponges are made from.

Rinse the sponge out with a bit of clean water after using bleach. That should solve your problem.
