    If you're in your 20s, you might want to start in a group house. Check Craigslist for possibilities, being careful not to give any money until you are sure that it's legitimate. There are a LOT of young people, including interns and co-ops moving in and out of DC, making for a lot of turnover in group houses.

    No most Realtors do not do rentals. Those that do would only handle the rentals they manage directly & would not help you locate soothing not in their portfolio. There are specific apt locator services. You can try a yellow pages search for 1 of those.

    Forrent.com & apartments.com are also helpful.
