French exam tomorrow, please help me with this qui/que?
La personne à … j’ai envoyé un email / the person who I sent an email to
I don't understand why this phrase has qui instead of que? j’ai envoyé un email = I have sent an email to
Isn't "I" the subject, which would mean that it should be que and not qui? I don't get it..
Many thanks!

La personne à # QUI # j’ai envoyé un email. Qui = to whom.
L'email QUE j’ai envoyé $ = that I send was received.

J'ai envoyé un e-mail ( = I sent an e-mail..) : "un e-mail" is the DIRECT object so you use "QUE"
=> l'e-mail que j'ai envoyé (= the mail THAT I sent)
j'ai envoyé un e-mail à un ami, à une personne etc..( = I sent a mail to my friend/ to someone (unspecified) :
"un e-mail" is still the direct object and "à un ami/ à une personne/à quelqu'un ......" is an INDIRECT object
So you need to use : l'ami/la personne...+ à QUI or "auquel/à laquelle"
=> la personne à qui j'ai envoyé/ à laquelle j'ai envoyé un mail
=> les personnes à qui j'ai envoyé/ auxquelles j'ai envoyé un mail
=> l'ami à qui j'ai envoyé/auquel j'ai envoyé un mail
=> les amis à qui/auxquels j'ai envoyé un mail
(= the friend/the personn WHOM I sent a mail........)
You will never use QUI to replace a direct object (idem for auquel/auxquels/à laquelle/auxquelles)
and you will never use QUE to replace an indirect object (Be careful because QUE can replace a personn when this personn is the direct object
ex : je regarde une fille => la fille que je regarde
