There are several reasons of cricket being more famous then other sports in India. The main reason is promotion.Cricket has been promoted as a major support in India.Cricketers have been in advertisements and all media also keep on telling us that cricketers earn in crores and they have big houses and all other non sense.
Another reason is that India did well in cricket .Cricket requires less equipment.A bat and a ball do the job.In hockey we need many hockey sticks.Cricket is played from the british times so its old.
Cricket has also money.BCCI has so much money. It works as charity organisation .It dosen't come under rti and tax fraud and all well leave it.
Most importantly we are fools and these rich people keep on making us fool.
They get money but what people get after watching a match leaving all their important work to watch a match in 45 degree temp .Cricketer will get 1 lakh ruppe in the end of match and u will go home empty handed.
Hockey dosen't have big names like sachin or dravid thats another reason.

A recent RTI has revealed that India has no national game.Earlier ,field hockey (a sport India won eight Olympic gold medals) enjoyed the special status.
The reason for the 'no national game's status can be attributed to the downslide of Indian hockey in last three decades.
Hockey has enjoyed all the praises and fun but when India lost badly opposite Pakistan in hockey took all the fame from hockey... From that time hockey has never come up... Meanwhile on other hand in 1983 Indian men won cricket world cup.
Cricket has never looked behind since 1983.

In cricket one bat is enough, they take turns in exchanging the bats while playing, but in hockey 22 bats are required, for both sides because of cost involved, India prefer cricket.

As long as I can remember, only old coots used to care about cricket in the 80s & very few youngsters. They were all up for rural games. (At least that what I have seen in my childhood.) Though 90s is the different era.
