A puppy or dog should be 100% housebroke first before allowing it to use a doggy door. If it's allowed to come and go as it pleases, it will never learn that it's not suppose to potty inside the house, so using a doggy door while in the process of housebreaking would be very confusing. Besides that, when housebreaking a puppy you're suppose to go outside with the pup so you can praise it when it does it's business outdoors and so that you can stay out there with it until it does *go.*

It depends on the size of the door, but I think that's pretty young to be using a door.

We have a doggie door. When we got our first puppy (she's now 4 1/2 years old) she wouldn't use the door because she couldn't push it open. She about 3 months old before she could use the door, she'd follow the bigger dogs out and play in the yard. BTW, she was fully potty trained by 5 months.

Our newest puppy (15 months) was a lot smaller and wasn't able to use the doggie door until she was almost 5 months old. Now, at 15 months, she's only about 90% potty trained.

I still went outside with both puppies and a regular basis, praise them when they go. Both went to work with me the first 3 months we had them. The doggie door didn't have anything to do with their potty training.

They are just totally different dogs. AND the people we got the youngest from started her on potty pads inside.

I'm not stupid or lazy and resent the implication. I could not correct the typographical error. I do not have the puppy yet and will not for several months. I am gathering information to try to accommodate my home to be safe and comfortable for my "first time" puppy. Why are you all being so mean? I appreciate any help I can get. The youtube trainer and breeder clips show young puppies using doggy doors. That is why I asked. By the way, I have a fully enclosed yard with a six foot fence.

Any dog can use a dogie door, breed and/or lack of breed has no bearing on this.

Just be sure your property is securely fenced in and never leave the dog outside unsupervised.

If it can figure out how to use the door, it can. But you'll never get it housetrained that way! Housetraining a dog requires some effort on the part of the owner!

What is a Imperial shiz Tzu,,,, it is spelled Shih Tzu, pronounced she zu.

And why could a shih Tzu use a dog door if trained

Any animal, including squirrels, rats, raccoons, cats and other dogs will figure it out. You will be feeding the forest and strays when they do.

A modern Dog should be walked on a Leash (like the law requires), to avoid mishaps like cars, fools, and rabid animals.

This includes what you may believe is a fenced area

And, you do not spell it like it sounds: "Shih Tzu" unless you are trolling.

I agree with Julie D, 100% house broken before the use of dog door. & for all the reasons she mentioned.

I assume you mean Shih tzu, and if you're really that stupid, you don't deserve to care for a dog
