Do most American's not know what (British) banter is?

I was watching a video on YouTube about British peoples' opinions and asking questions like 'what is banter?' I thought everyone knew what that was. I have a pretty dry sense of humor and whenever I talk to friends and try to banter with them (I'm American and live in U.S.) a lot of them get really offended and think I'm serious - I just never put it together cause I've always had this sense of humor.

Like the other day at the restaurant I worked at I asked a guy at the bar if he wanted a beer, he said 'No, I'll have some water.' I said alright and went to go get some and he quickly said 'No, **** water I don't want any, get me a beer.' I immediately responded, 'Good, we ran out of water anyway' and he started cracking up then I realized I hadn't had banter like that with anyone in ages then thought 'everyone always takes what I say so seriously.' Had I said that to most people that come in our restaurant, which is pretty laid back I get weird looks for 'busting their balls.' Have I just been living in the wrong country I live in my whole life? If so I need to move to England.

Of course they do. But any conversation is not "banter", nor is hate speech.

    ps *Americans, not "American's"

No body cares anymore and everything in america seems to be taken literally.
