What is the best way to get rid of flea's?

My dog has really bad flea's. Her back has gotten so red from all her scratching.

I tried different types of flea shampoo's and none of them worked. I've tried recommended dish washing soap that didn't work. I tried shaving her bald and it didn't work. I even tried getting her flea dipped and that didn't work. I'm just not sure what to do about her flea infestation anymore and I feel so bad for her.

Anyone else know anything I should try?

Update:

Ok guys. Before you get upset and rude towards me...I DID take her to a vet. They bathed her and flea dipped her. They also gave me a spray to be applied to her back. And they said that was all I had to do to get rid of her fleas. But it didn't work. So don't act like I didn't try that before asking yahoo. I'm not an idiot.

Update 2:

Also, thank you everyone.

Comfortis worked always great for me, though it can cause gastic upset once in a while. Advantage II is a topical which works well.

Flea shampoos don't work very well. Any shampoo will kill the fleas which are actually on your dog at the time of the bath, but won't do anything for flea eggs or fleas in your dog's environment.

In addition to a flea treatment you need to do a major cleanup of your house, the dog's bedding etc.

evey time when you put medication it can be shampoo or spray type, the flea will leave the dog and hide at the wall, especially in the cracks and later go back to the dog, I prefer using a spray anti flea, just take your dog outside, far from your house and spray it, the flea will leave your dog and can never go back to your dog. Check the walls, the fleas will hide and lay their eggs their, the best way to get rid of it is to use a lighter ( with long nozzle ) to burn long the cracks on the wall, just check the walls where your dog like to sleep, I'm sure you'll find some fleas hiding there

I can't garauntee that this will work but try putting one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in the dogs water. It makes the dog less appealing to the fleas. Also, you should clean anything the dog has come in contact with. Pet beds, blankets, furniture, etc. as those are probably infested too.

Vacuum entire premises, thoroughly, dispose vacuum contents outdoors, wash everything in hot water, hire an exterminator for your premises, have your vet recommend a preventative.

OTC products, including shampoos don't work, may harm and even kill your dog. Dish soap is extremely harmful.

Dogs shouldn't be bathed* unless vet recommended and/or prescribed.

Dogs should never be shaved, period. They need their coat to protect them not only from the elements and parasites but to regulate their body temperature.

Honestly you didn't think to just phone your vet and ask what works best in your area of the country?

Frontline, the fleas bite, they die. Or capstar, it's a pill, same thing, fleas bite they die.
