A controlling person would tell you what you have to wear or would refuse to be seen out with you unless you wore what they wanted.

Someone suggesting you change your style of dress, doesn't indicate control at all. Especially when he suggested you BOTH do it. He's wanting to make some changes, get a fresh new look, liven things up. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Might be worth it to consider humoring him, at least some of the time.

You can buy 'nice' clothes @ thrift shops starting from $4.99, if you know how to look for them. You can look nice with jeans & blazer jacket, with a blouse or a T-shirt too!

Nice means, how you put them together!

It is not controlling but I would ask why he wants this - he is away just now and what reason would he have for wanting you both to upgrade your clothing?? When he returns will both of you be going anywhere to meet his workmates or boss becuse it could be to show you off but whatever I would do what you want to do, Good Luck
