Does mSATA require installation?

Hi, I just discovered that my laptop has an mSata slot but the drive itself is not installed. I did some research and found that it can be used as cash or as a boot drive like dedicated SSD. If I install mSATA drive in my laptop will windows 10 recognize it and start using it as cash or will I need to install additional drivers and do extra configuration?

My laptop is Thinkpad E420s

    Hey there, Bela.

How large is the SSD? It doesn't matter that it's an mSATA SSD, everything is as it is with a regular SSD drive. However if you'll not use it as a regular drive (either OS drive or a secondary storage drive) for caching you should do some additional adjustments. All the SSD manufacturer's have tools for their drives which usually have the option for you to setup that SSD as a cache drive for an HDD, so I'd strongly recommend that you check that first. If you're still having trouble doing that, you should contact the SSD manufacturer's customer support and ask for further assistance.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes.

It should just recognise it as an additional "hard drive" and ask you how you want it to be used.
