Question for Via Rail engineers: How engineer knows when it's exact time to depart ?

Because here in Croatia and rest of Europe, in every manned station there is guy with a red cap (we call him traffic controller) and when it's time to depart, he walks out of the station in front of train locomotive and gives to engineer a sign "ready for depart". He does this by raising his hand in the air with the stick. Train can't go out of the station before he get this kind of approval. But I didn't see this in Canadian railways or American ?

How you control rail traffis from station to station over there ?

Rona is correct. Here in the US the conductor will call the engineer on the radio a few minutes prior to the departure time. The engineer will call the train dispatcher and tell him they are almost ready to depart. The dispatcher will then give them permission to depart (usually by giving the a signal ). When the conductor is ready he will call the engineer and tell him they are ready to depart. Away they go.
