Why are business eager to promote themselves as ‘green’ or ‘environmentally friendly’?

Because there are people who are obsessively concerned about the environment that they will buy anything advertised (whether true or not) as "green." Marketing firms are taking advantage of such people and their legitimate concerns, and in many cases, ripping them off. These people are suckers for the marketing schemes. They are very emotionally connected with the ideology, but not too smart otherwise.
