    Quadratic formula. x = [-b ± √(b² - 4ac)] / 2a

    Your equation is in the form: ax² + bx + c. c is negative in this case. So the values of a, b, and c are:

    a = 1

    b = 2

    c = -1

    Plug them into the quadratic formula and solve for x. You'll get two values for x. You'll get x = .414 and x = -2.414

    Do the work. If you don't, you won't see how it works and you won't get good exam scores. Practice this.

    What do you mean "solve"? Do you want the roots?

    x^2 + 2x - 1 = 0

    x = (-2 +/- sqrt(2^2 - 4(1)(-1))) / (2*1)

    x = (-2 +/- sqrt(4 + 4)) / 2

    x = (-2 +/- sqrt(8)) / 2

    x = -1 +/- sqrt(2)

    x =~ 0.4142135623730950488016887242097 or -2.4142135623730950488016887242097

    Question has no meaning.

    The word "solve" implies an equation and an equation requires an = sign.

    You use the quadratic formula. The answer should be 1 and -3.
