I really like this guy in my class but he doesn't notice me?

At first I thought he was really cute when I saw him at the beginning of the school year. One time I cracked a joke and didn't know that he was listening and he laughed , after that it was like time slowed down for me. I started paying attention to him more and more and found out that he is an artist like I am and he's really good. I tried saying hi and making conversation but he gives me simple answers and they don't last long. What can I do?
