The gas (or some of it) then travels out through the solar system passing the orbits of each planet.
The "gas" is mostly hydrogen ions and electrons.
Most CMEs are directed toward the earth - so they don't affect us
But if one is directed our way then we will have increased aurora activity for a few days.
And we could get interference to electronic equipment here on earth and on satellites.
