what professional do i call to detect source of "old home" smell in my house?
I recently purchased an older home (yeah the house is old, but not all old homes smell like an old house), and i've been noticing this indescribable smell that is in all fabric, sofa, clothes, purses, EVERYTHING!.....how do I find the source? Is there a smell Dr. or something?

You might try just airing out the house as much as possible...open all the windows and doors for a week or so...place fans in areas to promote airflow. Just plain fresh air can remove or neutralize a lot of odors from fabrics, carpet ,etc.. If you still have smells, you might try a local smoke /fire remediation company which can use ozone generator machines placed in rooms which can help neutralize some odors. Or try painting walls, etc.. to mask odors. Tear out old carpet, clean woodwork, etc..

More likely the oldest woman in your family, like mom or grandma. Pet, smoker, or cooking residue, most likely, or all of that. Fabrics are really tough. Hard surfaces are lotsa work, too.

It's probably cigarette smoke. Start washing everything, what cant be washed hang outside, shampoo rugs, spray Lysol and Fabreeze.......
